At our 2017 PsychSIGN Annual conference, Dr. Roberto Montenegro gave a presentation entitled “Systemic Bias and Microaggressions in Medicine.” Experiencing or witnessing bias and/or microaggression while a medical student can lead to uncomfortable feelings and conversations. Dr. Montenegro referenced his piece published in JAMA 2016 (My Name Is Not “Interpreter”) to share his experience and to allow others to use the piece as a starting point for conversation.
Similarly, Dr. Montenegro referenced the short handbook, “Overcome Prejudice at Work” by Drs. Ranna Parekh and Carl C. Bell. We encourage all students to peruse the stages and tips discussed there.
