II. Why Psychotherapy?
The use of psychotherapy among psychiatrists is on the decline, according to a recent article in Archives of General Psychiatry [1]. Could a lack of exposure during medical school be partly responsible? In fact, medical school curricula are increasingly emphasizing the diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment of acute mental illness, often at the expense of teaching other important modalities such as psychotherapy.
PsychSIGN therefore invites you to take your education into your own hands and gain exposure to the rich field of psychotherapy at our first Interactive Lecture Series, to be held Sat., Sept. 13 from 9:30-2:00 at the New York Psychoanalytic Society. This exciting conference will feature some of the most renowned and dynamic psychiatric educators and experts in the New York Metropolitan area, and will consist of talks, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for all medical students with an interest in psychotherapy. Lunch is included with your complimentary registration through the generous support of PsychSIGN’s parent organization, the American Psychiatric Association.
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to psychsignr1@gmail.com no later than Friday, September 5th, and include in your response 1) your name, email, med school, and year of study; 2) any dietary restrictions; and 3) whether you will be bringing a guest. (A limited number of guests are welcome based on availability, and must also officially be registered at the above email address.)
We look forward to seeing you in New York on September 13th!
Sincerely,
Justin Chen |

American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) 54th Annual Meeting
Sheraton Boston Hotel, Boston, MA
October 23-28, 2007
In 2007 we were fortunate enough to have our regional conference in conjunction with the AACAP national meeting in Boston, MA. Registration for both the AACAP meeting and our regional conference was free for medical students thanks to the support of Stacia Hall, Gabe Robbins, and the administration of AACAP. Below is information about the conference as it was posted last year:
1) Online registration for the conference is closed. However, you can easily do on-site registration once you arrive at the Sheraton Boston (www.starwoodhotels.com/ sheraton/ boston). ALL YOU NEED TO REGISTER IS A VALID MEDICAL STUDENT ID -- please do not forget this during your packing!
2) Many of you have expressed interest in attending the Medical Student, Resident and Early Career Psychiatry Breakfast on Friday, 10/26 from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. This is a ticketed event, which means you need to request a ticket when you register on-site. The cost is $10.
3) Please come to our PsychSIGN meeting on Sat., Oct. 27th from 1-3 p.m. (location will be listed in the conference program which you will receive upon registration). Speakers include Dr. Andres Martin from Yale (confirmed) and Dr. Cindy Telingator from Harvard/Cambridge Hospital (pending). This will also be an opportunity for med students from different schools to talk about increasing interest in psychiatry at their various institutions.
4) In terms of food, conference participants are for the most part on their own (unless you find free food at the conference). There are apparently a number of small eateries in the vicinity of the hotel.
The following events of particular interest to medical students are taken from AACAP.org (click here to go directly to the conference website:
